Take a Break, Move Your Body

As entrepreneurs, we are always hustling and trying to get ahead. However, in our pursuit of success, we often forget to take care of our bodies and our health. It is important to remember that our bodies are the vessels that allow us to go out and chase our dreams. If we do not take care of them, they will not be able to take care of us. That is why I believe that it is so important to make time for a fitness routine, even if it is just a quick workout during your lunch break. Here are three reasons why physical activity is important, especially when you spend most of your day sitting at a computer.

Stress Relief

Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress. When we exercise, our brains release chemicals called neurotransmitters that have mood-boosting effects. These chemicals include endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. Dopamine contributes to the feeling of pleasure, and serotonin helps regulate mood, memory, sleep, and appetite. Endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that control your perception of pain. In other words, they can help to take the edge off both mentally and physically. Not to mention, exercise is a great way to get frustrations out!

Improved Concentration and Focus

A sedentary lifestyle can lead to a decrease in focus and concentration. According to a study done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), “a significant positive association was found between physical activity and cognitive performance." In other words, the more active you are, the better your cognitive performance will be. So if you find yourself struggling to stay focused at work, try taking a brisk walk around the block or doing some jumping jacks in your office. You may just find that you are more productive when you get back to your desk.

Better Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for good health and well-being. Unfortunately, many people do not get enough sleep because they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “regular aerobic exercise will help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep." So if you find yourself tossing and turning at night, try working out during the day so that you can get a better night’s rest. You will be thankful in the long run.

Overall, countless benefits come with incorporating physical activity into your daily routine. It relaxes the brain, reduces stress, and can improve concentration and focus. It is also essential for getting a good night’s sleep. So make sure to take a break from work every now and then to move your body and get your heart rate up! Your mind—and your business—will thank you for it in the long run.
